June 27th Shark Trip

On Saturday we had the Sean Moran charter out for a shark trip.  We left the dock at 6am and ran to the 30 fathom fingers a little Southeast of the inlet.  Arriving at our spot we were greeted by birds and bait all over.  We tried trolling for about an hour with no luck, but we did see splashes and a few small bluefins flying out of the air. Setting up for sharks, we had 9 bluesharks for the day. We had a very slow drift, with the wind dropping out about midway through the day.  We had tons of sandeels around the boat all day and bluefins busting in the distance.  The water rose from 61.3 to 69.7 throughout the day, but the water was still very cold below the surface.  We did try trolling again on the way in with no luck.  The charter was happy and we all had a great time on the water.  We were also greeted by a whale that circled the boat for about 20min., which the charter was able to snap a bunch of photos.

We have some open days for the July 4th holiday for shark or tuna fishing.  There are reports of some small yellowfins and good size mahi-mahi on the troll and some decent size makos at night in the canyons.  We have some prime dates for the canyon still open if anyone is interested.  Check out our open boat dates for the canyons as well.   We hope to hear for you soon, and everybody have a safe and healthy holiday.

Inshore 7/6, 7/9,710

We had a busy week with both inshore and offshore fishing.  On the inshore scene we have done well with the bass during the mid-week period.  There were a few keepers still around and a good amount of shorts.  Live baits have been the ticket to get bites.  On the fluking front, we have had a lot of action, but very few keepers.  We averaged 2 keepers per trip.  Sea bass have started to move in on the inshore wrecks so will be targeting them on the inshore trips as well.

July 8th Bluefin Trip

On Wednesday, July 8th, we did a crew trip to try and target the bluefins that have been all over the 30 fathom fingers.  Since the fish have not been taking lures, we wanted to try and chunk and jig for them. We tried for 4 hours setting up a first light, with no success.  We moved several times and were in the middle of the discovery channel with whales, dolphins and birds crashing all around us and bait underneath, but were unable to get a bite.  We decided to call it a day at 11 and on the way in, we marked more bait and whales in the 20 fathom area. With 2 flats left, we decided to give it a try.  Well, we had no luck on the tuna, but as we are reeling up our last bait, a 250+ lb thresher decided to eat and with only 80lb flouro, we busted him off.  We did get 2 nice jumps out of him and had him close to the boat once, but not close enough for a harpoon shot.

July 11th Shark Charter

We had a Shark Charter on Sat. which was also Day 1 of the Shinnecock Marlin & Tuna Club Tournament.  We fished in 180 feet where all the whales, tuna, dolphin, bait and birds have been for the past 2 weeks.  We caught and released 5 blue sharks, with a few others in the slick but not taking a bait.  We did have tuna busting around the boat, but would not come into casting or jigging range.  There were some bigger bluefins in the 50-60 lb range busting the surface.  We will be out again on Tuesday and Saturday shark fishing.  We then move into Tuna season, with reports of some 50lb yellows being taken along with big bigeyes being taken in the Fishtails area.  We still have some prime dates available as well as OPEN BOAT TRIPS coming up.  We still need a few people to fill out the charter.  Hope to hear from you soon.
